Here you will find links to organizations and agencies that educate about various stroke conditions and treatments and offer support services to stroke survivors. At first glance there seems to be a lack of actual support but, once you’re connected to someone actively in this stroke life, you will find open doors, local and online support groups and specific information relevant to you. These links are a good starting point to get you where you need to be.
Stroke injury to the brain has a different cause than traumatic brain injury but the results are the same. There is a lot of debate among researchers, hospitals and physicians as to whether stroke should be recoded and deemed a brain injury/disorder. This is great news as it opens the door for insurance covered treatments, support, rehab and funding for home modifications, disability transportation and equipment currently only prescribed to TBI patients.
Until then, Traumatic Brain Injury organizations are already open arm accepting stroke survivors with support and resources so check out their sites too.
Vascular dementia is a real side effect of stroke and similar in presentation to Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Because dementia affects cognition and speech, stroke survivors can utilize some of their techniques and coping skills. Sites for these diseases offer support and education for both stroke survivors and their families dealing with any degree of dementia including the coined phrase, “stroke brain”, a decrease in the ability to process, reason or sequence emotions, thoughts and behaviors.
