Neurofeedback will change your mind….literally
Our brain has electrical currents in alpha, beta, theta and delta. Each current variation has a different characteristic.
| Beta (β) | 12–35 Hz | Anxiety dominant, active, external attention, relaxed |
| Alpha (α) | 8–12 Hz | Very relaxed, passive attention |
| Theta (θ) | 4–8 Hz | Deeply relaxed, inward focused |
| Delta (δ) | 0.5–4 Hz | Sleep |
With stroke, the brain waves may be more or less active. The concept of Neurofeedback is to calm overactive and stimulate underactive waves to give you a balanced brain. You watch a screen and follow the directives to “reward” your brain for honing in on the desired brain wave, thus training your brain to fire up or put to rest that current.
There is some controversy on how well it really works or is it a placebo affect. It isn’t for everyone – if you have a cranioplasty plate, vp shunt or other implants, you may not be a candidate. Discuss this with your surgeon or neurologist before proceeding.
