Ok, we might be exaggerating a bit here. We aren’t talking about an indulgent spa experience when we talk about massage. However, these types of massage are just as important to your well being.
Myofascial
Myofascial massage stretches and eases the tension of the myofascia, a connected band of muscles that span the entire length of your body. When one area is constricted from scar tissue or injury, the entire system feels the affect. Weekly massage of the Myofascial muscles will help tremendously to alleviate pain and tightness.
Reiki
Reiki massage is a directional ebb and flow of energy from the masseuse and the client. It actually has great benefit in calming not only the body which is often in overdrive but also the mind and soul. You do not have to practice religion to reap the benefits of Reiki. Our bodies are truly electrical currents and are affected by those currents in the atmosphere so Reiki has its roots in some pretty good science. The best part, it is an incredibly relaxing experience for a survivor trying to get their body centered.
Therapeutic
Therapeutic massage is more than just the Swedish massage you get at the spa. It’s a combination of stretching and working constricted and tight muscles with smoothing the body knots. Stroke after affects are more than just the brain and the body holds a lot of that stress. Massage allows relaxation of tight and sore muscles, movement not initiated by the survivor and a relaxing of stiff limbs.
In the Resources page is some good information about the benefits of massage and also some links to home massage techniques should the cost of a professional be prohibitive. Even having a professional massage monthly and getting a close friend or family member to do it weekly would provide much needed benefit.
